title - whats proposed

The Mid Valley Recreation Center would provide affordable fitness and recreation programs for all age groups, from children to senior citizens. In addition, the facility would serve as a community center, bringing together mid-valley residents for multiple events and activities. At the Rec Center, you'll be able to swim laps, take a variety of fitness classes, plan a party with swimming and rock climbing, enroll your kids in day camp, join an indoor soccer or volleyball league, take a first aid class and so much more.

Location
The Mid Valley Recreation Center would be located at Crown Mountain Park, on the downvalley side of City Market in El Jebel. The distance from the El Jebel bus stop to the site is equal to about 2.5 blocks, or less than a five-minute walk – a shorter distance than from the bus stop to the public pool in Basalt. A sidewalk/bike path would be constructed from the highway to the Rec Center.

The Facility
The building is designed to be attractive and energy-efficient while minimizing construction and operational costs. The current design is for a 63,000 square foot facility. By comparison, the Aspen Recreation Center is 83,000 square feet and the Glenwood Springs Community Center is 65,000 square feet.

Programs
The number and variety of programs that the Mid Valley Rec Center could offer is reason for excitement. Spaces are designed for multiple uses and the public's ideas are encouraged. Some of the proposed programs include basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer and floor hockey leagues; swim lessons, water aerobics, scuba and kayaking classes; community dances; and fitness classes including dance, yoga, spin, pilates and aerobics. The Rec Center could be host to kids' birthday parties, adult swim events, bingo, shuffleboard parties and more.

The proposed center includes these facilities, chosen based on survey results of residents' desires:
  • Indoor swimming area with lap and recreation pools, hot tub
  • Weight training and cardio facilities
  • Fitness/aerobics/dance studio
  • Indoor jogging track
  • Rock climbing wall
  • Multi-purpose gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, martial arts, indoor soccer, badminton, dances, movies, birthday parties and more
  • Game room
  • Shuffle Board
  • Child watch room
  • Meeting and event rooms (for parties, community events, etc.)
Future Phase
In future years, a second phase could be added to the Rec Center if desired by local communities and approved as part of the Master Plan now before Eagle County Commissioners. The additional 22,000 square feet could include an ice rink, indoor tennis courts, more swimming lanes, gymnastics/aerial training area, or other facilities.

The plan going before Eagle County Commissioners this summer asks for approval of both phases totaling 85,000 square feet, even though voters would be asked to approve only the current design for 63,000 square feet. The second phase would require a separate, future public vote of approval. Getting approval from commissioners now for a larger facility later would allow flexibility to consider adding features in the future. It also saves taxpayer money to go through only one round of government approvals.
